Ask three transport companies to quote the same shipment and you can get three different truck types back. That is not because anyone is wrong. It is because "the right truck" depends on details that are easy to leave out of a request.
This guide walks through how trucks are categorised in Thailand, what each class is genuinely suited to, and the questions worth answering before you ask for a quote.
How trucks are classified here
Thailand classifies commercial vehicles by wheel count rather than by tonnage. It is a shorthand you will hear constantly, and it maps loosely onto size.

The classes are commercial conventions, not rigid legal categories. Two operators' "6-wheel" trucks can differ in bed length and internal height. Always ask for actual internal dimensions rather than relying on the class name alone.
Volume usually decides before weight does
The most common mistake is choosing a truck by weight. In practice most shipments run out of space long before they run out of permitted load.
Consider packaged consumer goods. A pallet of snack food might weigh 200 kg but occupy a full pallet footprint. Fill a 6-wheel truck with those and you will fill the deck at a fraction of its weight capacity. Meanwhile a pallet of tinned goods or liquids hits the weight limit with the deck half empty.
The practical rule: work out your volume and your weight, then size for whichever runs out first.
To do that you need three numbers:
- Total number of pallets or cartons
- The footprint and height of each
- Total weight
Whether the load can be stacked matters just as much. Goods that cannot be stacked take their full floor area regardless of how short they are, and that single fact often moves a shipment up a truck class.
Loading and unloading shapes the choice
A truck that fits your goods is not necessarily a truck that can reach them.
- Access at both ends. A 10-wheel truck that cannot turn into your customer's loading area is the wrong truck no matter how well the cargo fits. Narrow sois, low bridges, weight-restricted roads and multi-storey car parks all rule out larger vehicles.
- Loading method. Forklift access needs a bed height that suits the dock. Hand loading favours a lower deck. Tail lifts are not universal, so confirm rather than assume.
- Time on site. Some receivers hold strict delivery windows, particularly modern trade retailers. A larger truck that arrives outside its slot can be turned away entirely.
Temperature control changes the calculation
Refrigerated trucks carry less than their dry equivalents. The insulation and the cooling unit both consume space and weight, so a chill truck of the same wheel class has a smaller usable interior.
If any part of the load requires temperature control, that requirement sets the vehicle for the whole shipment unless the load is split. Mixing chilled and ambient goods in one truck is possible but adds handling and risk, and is worth discussing rather than assuming.
Questions worth answering before you ask for a quote
You will get a faster, more accurate answer if you can state:
- Pickup and delivery locations, including any access restrictions
- Total pallets or cartons, with dimensions
- Total weight
- Whether the load can be stacked
- Temperature requirement, if any
- Required delivery date and any fixed time window
- Whether loading or unloading assistance is needed
Answering those seven turns a rough estimate into a firm one, and usually prevents the most expensive outcome: a truck arriving that cannot take the load.
The underlying principle
Transport pricing follows a simple logic. You are buying a vehicle and a driver for a route, and the cost is largely fixed once that truck moves. Whether it leaves half empty or fully loaded, the fuel, the hours and the tolls are much the same.
That is why accurate volume matters more than most shippers expect. Undersize the truck and you pay for a second trip. Oversize it and you pay for air. Getting the measurements right the first time is the cheapest thing you can do.
